Curdled glaze soap dish

This piece was fun. So, If you know me, then you know that I love textures and the abstract essence of creating something. I started to make this piece, with no idea of the desired finished appearance, only the purpose. I wanted to make a soap dish that you could set on the corner of your bath, or on your kitchen or bathroom sink. I didn’t want it to trap the left over water and residue from the soap (like traditional soap dishes) but rather let the water run back into the sink and not be left to settle around the taps. I liked the shape and size and wanted a plain white glaze however the kiln did what the kiln does and used my art to make art of it’s own. Do you see the glaze how it has bundled together revealing the raw clay underneath? this is called curdling and is a reaction between the glaze and the firing process.

I love how this piece came out of the kiln with curdled glaze allowing you to see some raw clay underneath. This wasn’t intentional and if this was a mug or a plate it would be rendered useless however when I seen this art that the fire had made I absolutely loved it. I have no idea how the blue got there. This piece is a mystery in itself. The textures and visuals are beautiful and became one of my favourite pieces for a time 🥰
